Explosives + Ushers = Police

A 16 year old boy from Phoenix, AZ entered a packed church service with around 700 in attendance carrying in a backpack containing 15 homemade explosives. He also left the packed church service with around 700 in attendance carrying out a backpack containing 15 homemade explosives. Later ushers heard an explosion and found the boy with some friends in the parking lot after detonating one of the explosives. The police were called and conducted a search of the boys home using the bomb squad. The parents commented that they knew their son was interested in bombs and Sgt. Andrew Duncan stated he believed it was just experimentation.

You can read more here.

Some questions:
-The police mentioned that static electricity could have set off the devices and a major catastrophe could have occurred. Do you find this believable?
-If the boy did not set off any explosives in the midst of the 700, why did that part of the story make it to the news?
-Do you find anything wrong with the boy carrying firecracker like explosives in a backpack in public?
-What do you think about the parent's comment?
