New Church Website: Cornerstone Community Church

This was our old site design:

This is our new site design:

A volunteer team consisting of 4 guys from my church have been working in our spare time on a new website for our church, after over a year of after hours work here and there we have finally made it public. The new site has many new features: Video, an improved search feature, a calendar of events, updated resources and categories among other things.

The old website was done strictly using PHP. The new site we chose to utlize Joomla! based off the database integration, the use of modules, and the ease of updating via the front and back end admin areas. If your church's web presence utilizes a database for sharing sermons and the like, Joomla! may be an option you want to look at when it comes time to update your site. Joomla! is open source as well.

If you want to view the site you can do so here: Cornerstone Community Church website.

For comparison purposes, you can view the old site here: Old Cornerstone Community Church website.

If you happen across any errors, please do let me know. Thanks.

Social Networking Game Play Leads To Rise In Infant Mortality

Alexandra V. Tobias, 22, was arrested after the January death of 3-month-old Dylan Lee Edmondson. She told investigators she became angry because the baby was crying while she was playing a computer game called FarmVille on the Facebook social-networking website.

You can read the rest here.

Some questions:
-Is the mother alone to blame?
-Why do insignificant things such as game playing, social networking, etc. override the sense of duty and responsibility?
-Do you see this type of thing happening more and more?
-How did we come to such a place that values entertainment over responsibility?

Google Chrome OS

In the second half of 2010 Google will release its first operating system in direct competition with Microsoft Windows. It will be based on the Google Chrome browser and initially released on netbooks. Note, this is not a variation of Android, but a build based off Chrome.

You can read more here.

Some questions:
-If you are a user of other Google products, do you think you would use this?
-Do you think they have a chance of usurping Microsoft Windows?
-Do you think this will effect Mac sales or Linux sales?

Scam Concerning Google

http://scottsmoneyblog.com/index.html (notice where "he's" from- my home town)

http://www.kevinlifeblog.com/index.php?sub=vccpa

Notice any similarities?

They, the company, should be sued.

I typed in some bogus information on the first page of the site they link to (here and here is another) and down at the bottom in small print (on the second page- after you type in the information) it says they will bill you 70+ a month for access to their system- The Google Treasure Chest as they call it. What tipped me off was the disclaimer at the bottom of the blogs. Plus, both links were top results on alexa.com.

Here is their fine print: By submitting this form I authorize Google Treasure Chest to immediately charge my credit card for instant access to the Instant Google kit. I hereby request that Google Treasure Chest activate my account and authorize them to advance funds as indicated. Monthly Service fees will commence seven days from the date of this purchase, and will be billed monthly thereafter. After the seven day trial you will be billed seventy one dollars and twenty one cents USD monthly for the continued access to the software. No refunds will be given for failure to use the requested and provided services. You may cancel at anytime by writing to 2510 Warren Ave Ste. 3363, Cheyenne, WY 82001 or calling 866.951.1406.

Mint.com: Great Free Tool For Budgeting

I've started using mint.com as a one stop shop for all things having to do with my finances. It is a really ingenious tool that I think Dave Ramsey himself would be envious of. If you have even thought about it at all, you're probably asking yourself the same questions I did when I first ran across this online program: "Why do I need another place to go to online to view my finances?" "And, what does it have to offer that my bank's online service doesn't?" Well, those are fair questions and I hope to explain below how it was answered for me. But, let me give a little more information on the online service before we delve into it.

When I first heard of this my initial response was that I wouldn't give a company access to my financial information- especially if it allows third parties to store the data (as duly noted on the sites TOC). However, after reading several reviews, carefully reviewing the terms and conditions, and checking out their security certificates I was curious enough and at ease enough to set up an account.

Setting up an account was about as easy as signing up for email- in fact, it couldn't have been easier. No issues there. Once complete I then was directed to a screen to set up accounts. You can see that screen below in the screen shot (click on it to enlarge).

So, once here, you click on the box that says "Click to add any of your accounts" and it will bring up a list of common big name accounts and a search box. You can search for yours- that is what I did for mine. I typed in my bank's name, it found it and I started typing in my user name and password for the online banking of my bank's website.

This is where I first ran into an issue (not the site's fault mind you). I couldn't remember my security questions for my banking site (personal, business and savings). They want the service to be secure, so they make sure you know your security questions. Not only do you need to remember the answers, but you need to remember which questions you chose to answer. I had to log in to my bank's site and review my questions and answers (for me, capitalization mattered). So, make sure you know your security questions! Once I got the bank set up, I added the one credit card we own via search and repeated the process. Then I added our ingdirect account without a hitch (well, the security questions was an issue again, but I knew how to solve that) and then I wanted to add my mutual funds but I don't think I ever checked them online. However, I wanted to make sure they were on the mint.com list, so I did a search for them and sure enough, they were there. So, I need to retrieve that information from my financial advisor so I can add those too.

Once you are done here, it syncs up to your accounts every evening to get the most current information automatically.

On the overview section of the site, it gives you, well, just that, an overview. Here you can see your net worth, cash assets, debt, budget, investments, etc. If you just want to see a summary of what you have, this is the page to be on.

This screen shot is just a continuation of the previous as there was some items left off on the bottom, namely cashflow and net income. I wanted you to be able to see everything that is on the page.

Almost everything is customizable on this site when you are logged in. While still on the overview page, you can click on the budget and set it up how you wish. I have yet to do this (but I am). The only drawback I can see here is that you can't import an existing budget. I currently use an excel spreadsheet that I made that allows my wife and I to see our money on paper (technically on screen) and it would be nice to be able to import that and dump in the information and make adjustments on the back end if necessary. So Mint, if you are listening, this would be a nice feature to add. Other than that, this will be a nifty little tool to use as it sends out alerts (if you tell it to) to tell you when you have gone over on your budget or any other alerts you may care to know. It can do this via email and/or phone text messaging.

Trends is a tab that shows you were your money is going. It gives you graphs and charts- just like Ross Perot! However, these graphs and charts pertain to just you and your finances and whatever you wish to compare it to. If you hover over a pie piece or a bar on a graph, it will give you a pop up with further information and options for you to change items. For instance, if you notice on ours, shopping takes up the biggest portion of the pie. Well, that is because we bought our groceries from Wal-Mart (we are using a meal plan called e-mealz.com and that is the only option in our area- we would have preferred Kroger) and we have yet to go through and denote Wal-mart as groceries and not shopping- yes you can change the categories.

This is phenomenal. My wife was saying to me a while back, "I wish I could make a notation on a reimbursement on our account." Well, guess what? Now she can. But before I get a head of myself, take a look at the screen shot. It pulls all this information from our bank account and gives us a each charge, credit and reimbursement and also allocates it as best it can based on the vendor. I find this to be very helpful as it allows for us to go through the list of items and reconcile the bank statement with our receipts. If there is something we know will come up again (like for my business taxes), we can now add a note to it so we can review it with ease. That leads me to the next screen shot.

Here you will notice that I expanded the edit details bar. You can split the transaction, edit the name (on ours Deals was called some sort of jibberish, but we just simply renamed it and all was well with the world), edit the category and/or make the category and/or name permanent for this entry every time it comes in. So, If I went to deals today after making the change and setting it to always rename, then the transaction that took place today will show up as "deals" and not the jibberish it was before.

If you sign up, I recommend it, you will notice that there are two tabs I did not provide screen shots for or review. This is b/c I don't use them. One is investments and the other is way's to save. The first I will use if I ever remember to ask for my mutual fund information for online viewing. The second one I looked at and it looks as if it is a partner page type deal. It seeks to give you ideas of money you could save if you changed your current financial providers to other providers. For instance on ours it says our bank does not offer interest on our savings account. Well, in fact it does, but it does not register it (however it does show the interest in our transactions tab). With this they say we should move our savings to another bank that will offer x amount in interest and therefore after one year we would have made x. They do the same thing with our money market checking account. So basically, as good as I can tell, they compare your current financial institutions' offerings to their sponsors' offerings and let you see the difference (which in our case, was wrong).

However, I think this is a great tool and why it's free I haven't a clue. I can say this though, I recommend the service. I am leery of all things web- especially when it comes to accounts and the like, but after doing some research and trying it out myself, I really like it and benefit from it- hopefully you will as well.

If you do set up your account, comment below and let me know how it is working out for you.

Facebook Entry Leads To Death

A husband who hacked his wife to death with a meat cleaver in fury over her Facebook entry was jailed for a minimum of 14 years at the Old Bailey today.
Wayne Forrester, 34, drank alcohol and took cocaine before driving 15 miles to the family home to attack wife Emma as she lay in bed.
The couple had separated four days before the murder in February and Forrester later told police he had been provoked by his wife changing her marital status to "single" on her Facebook entry, the court heard.

Priorities. This guy's priorities were not on working to keep his family together, but on what to find to make himself mad enough to kill his wife... who knew a facebook entry would be the straw that broke the camels back? Oh what a terrible sin pride is indeed.

Email: What Do You Use?

I have been using gmail since it was first released via invitation only back in 2004. I still keep my Hotmail account just for junk mailings (if I need to sign up for something). However, I am extremely pleased with gmail and its philosphy that you do not have to throw away anything ever nor do you have to file things away- just search for it. This is a great tool. If you need to review an email with a key code in it or download link, just type something in the search box that was in the email and there it is. It also narrows down email addresses as you type them in (or the name associated with them) in the address field. Once you see a list of names appear, just choose the one you want- no more address book or memorizing email addresses. On top of that you have storage galore and google talk built right in. Did I mention that their spam filter is phenomenal? I don't remember the last time I had spam slip through into my inbox.

In addition to email, your google account also opens up to you the ability to utilize google calendar, google docs, and a plethora of other services.

There are also "add ons" that can turn your gmail account into a storage space for files and such. There is even one that utilizes it to run a web based operating system.

So, I say all that to ask this: who is your email client and why?

Google Gulp

At Google our mission is to organize the world's information and make it useful and accessible to our users. But any piece of information's usefulness derives, to a depressing degree, from the cognitive ability of the user who's using it. That's why we're pleased to announce Google Gulp (BETA)™ with Auto-Drink™ (LIMITED RELEASE), a line of "smart drinks" designed to maximize your surfing efficiency by making you more intelligent, and less thirsty.

The privacy statement:

From time to time, in order to improve Google Gulp's usefulness for our users, Google Gulp will send packets of data related to your usage of this product from a wireless transmitter embedded in the base of your Google Gulp bottle to the GulpPlex™, a heavily guarded, massively parallel server farm whose location is known only to Eric Schmidt, who carries its GPS coordinates on a 64-bit-encrypted smart card locked in a stainless-steel briefcase handcuffed to his right wrist. No personally identifiable information of any kind related to your consumption of Google Gulp or any other current or future Google Foods product will ever be given, sold, bartered, auctioned off, tossed into a late-night poker pot, or otherwise transferred in any way to any untrustworthy third party, ever, we swear. See our Privacy Policy.

If anyone needs any Gulp caps, let me know.

Funny Videos You Make With Your Own Subtitles

Bombay TV. A fun time waster. It takes movie clips from Bollywood movies (the biggest producer of movies annually) and allows you to add your own subtitles. Seeing how you can't understand what they are saying anyways (they speak in Hindi), you can have a lot of fun with this.

I stumbled upon this site over a year ago and we had a lot of fun with it in the office... sometimes too much fun.

So, here's the deal, you visit the site, make your own and post then link to it in the comments section. We will compare and contrast and see who came up with the funniest one.

Facebook: Do You Use It?

Changes are coming at the end of May according to Facebook insiders. A new look and new "tricks" are opening up for developers.

Here is a screenshot:

You can read more here.

Ever wonder what they do with all that information you plug into Facebook? Well, somebody did and they drew up a conspiracy theory; who knows, maybe it is the truth.

Here is their theory:

Some questions:
-Do you use Facebook?
-If you watched the video, does that make you less inclined to use it?
-Do you install any of the 3rd party applications?
-Do you use Myspace?
-What was the draw to using Facebook or Myspace?

Easy & Fun Way To Feed The Poor

FreeRice.com is a legitimate site founded by John Breen with the aim to reduce hunger around the world. He has also started other sites that tackle other large problems that result from the curse of the fall. The advertisers pay for the food that is donated to those who need it (based on the United Nations World Food Program. All you have to do is guess the right definition for each word shown and you will build up rice in 20 grain increments. So, not only are you feeding the poor, but you are also building your vocabulary and having fun while doing it. It almost feels wrong to be able to help the poor in such a way as this. It seems like you should have to sacrifice something yeah?

HT: Lili Tankersley

You can feed the poor here.

Some questions:
-Do you think this is a good idea?
-What was your vocab. level?
-How much rice did you procure for the hungry?
-Do you think this is as rewarding as sacrificing to provide for those less fortunate? Please explain your answer.

Don't Steal That Song, It May Not Be Legal!

Music fans around the world faced confusion today as it was announced they would be able to download unlimited, free songs without breaking the law.

A revamped online file-sharing service had vowed to offer a catalogue of 30million free songs that are compatible with iPods, but record labels have denied they had granted permission to share the songs.

...Warner Music said it had not authorised the use of its tracks by Qtrax - and later Universal Music Group and EMI followed suit, saying they did not have licensing deals with Qtrax and discussions were continuing.

You can read more here.

An observation:
-As quick as it came, in all probability, it is gone.

Recent Comment Secton To Side Bar Addition

Several of my readers have asked about the comment section on my blog. Others I have told about in hopes that they would add it so I could keep up better with the conversations on their blogs. This was an area where Wordpress had Blogger beat, but a user came up with a method to add a comment section and it works great. I have been using it since I started blogging as it helps readers to know where the conversations are and what topics have peaked the interests of others and along the same lines, it peaks the interest of those who are just clicking through.

So, with that being said, I thought I would post a link to the site that allowed me to add this feature to my blog.

You can find it here.

Some questions:
-Did you find this useful?
-Have you since added this widget to your blog?
-Have you found that it promotes further dialogue on topics?
-If you used it but got rid of it, what led to its removal?

DivX On The PS3: The Rumors Are True

The below is taken from a DivX newsletter:

You may have heard the news about PlayStation 3 support for DivX video. Well, pop the bubbly because it's true. We have indeed made a deal with Sony to add DivX video playback to their popular PS3 gaming console.
And that's all you get for now. While I wish I could answer the most obvious question and tell you exactly when the DivX-laden updates will be released, I can't. Sorry. I know it's a little out of character for gamers, but try to be patient. I mean, you could always go play a game while you wait. I hear Mrs. Pac Man is fun ... the boards change! Imagine that.

That is great. No more round about ways to get DivX to play on the PS3. Here is what I have been doing in case anyone is interested in playing back DivX or a plethora of other files on your PS3. I have been using Nero Ultimate 7 with its media home server and Nero Scout additions to transcode files on the fly and stream them wirelessly to the Playstation 3 for playback on the television. It works great and with the latest updates the only thing I cannot get to work is the DivX HD files. I hope that the officially supported update will include this ability.

Here are two links with two different options of playing media from your PC to your TV via the PS3 (media that Windows Media Server will not recognize). Enjoy!

Option 1: Tversity (free)
Option 2: Nero Ultimate 7 (free if you already own Nero Ultimate 7 or 8)

Askville From Amazon.com

I recieved this in my inbox this morning and thought I would share. I am curious to see if it is just a knock-off of the now defunct Google Answers or the still up-and-running Google Groups or if Amazon has come up with some improvements to the peer answer system. It is going to be hard to beat threaded responses in my opinion.

Here is message sent to me: You're Invited! As a valued Amazon customer, you've been specially picked to get an early look at a new website Amazon has just launched called Askville. Askville is a place where you can ask any question on any topic and get real answers from real people. It’s a fun place to meet others with similar interests to you and a place where you can share what you know. You can learn something new every day or help and meet others using your knowledge. It's new, and best of all, it's free!

You can visit Askville here.

Black Friday Survival Guide

Whether you plan to go to Wal-Mart, Macy's, Radio Shack, Toys-R-Us or any other of the thousands of retailers out there, a first stop should be Deal News. Deal News is an internet site dedicated to bringing you the best deals that are available today at no cost to you. As a matter of fact, they don't even sell anything. They do compile all the deals and tell you by category or by store what deals are available to you from that retailer or category. From there you can make your decisions and save some too.

For Black Friday this year (as they do every year) they compiled a list of ads from the stores and even listed stores that are selling their Black Friday deals online on Thursday so you don't even have to leave your home to catch a deal. Below is a link to some helpful tips from Deal News that will help you beat the crowds.

You can read the survival guide here.

Playing In The Sandbox

I ran across this free software called Sandboxie. I thought I would share it here. It is along the lines of antivirus, ad blocking, spyware protection utilities except that it tackles the issue from a whole new perspective. What it does is keep anything that could/would be a potential virus or ads or spyware from ever reaching your system per se. What it does is set up a transient place of storage. If you download something or get infected with a virus, you simply empty out your sandbox and all is well. It never touches your system or system settings as it never leaves the sandbox. Neat concept and neat idea. I thought some might benefit from it. Give it a look.

You can read more about it and download it here.

Some questions:
-What do you currently use to protect your system from unwanted effects?-Do you think this program might aide you in keeping your system running smooth?

Why The Mass Appeal?

Two girls go at it in a locker room. Somebody stands by with a camera phone and records the brawl... to post on Youtube. Now the video has thousands of views and is growing in popularity. What is the appeal? Why are we drawn to such things and "entertained by them? Rest assured the Norwood Middle School girl who suffered the beating and her family are not entertained by it.

Here is the News Clip.

Here is the raw video taken from a mobile phone.
