He seems very humble, and I think that is what adds to the "heart warming" quality of the whole thing. If he had pranced out on the stage and talked about how good he was, it wouldn't have been nearly so poignant. And, while I'm not a huge opera fan, sometimes the right voice combined with music that stirs emotion, well...it does bring me to tears, though that sounds a bit cheesy. ;)
